Fixing a garage door that reverses or won't stay closed
If your garage door starts down and then immediately reverses, the cause is very often the photo-eye safety sensors rather than anything wrong with the door or opener. These are the two small units mounted about six inches above the floor on either side of the opening, connected by an invisible infrared beam.
They've been mandatory on residential openers in the US since 1993 for good reason — they're what stops a closing door from trapping a child or a pet. They're deliberately fail-safe, so when in any doubt the opener refuses to close. That's the system working as intended, even though it's inconvenient.
How to realign garage door safety sensors
Diagnose and correct misaligned photo-eye safety sensors on a residential garage door opener.

Check both indicator lights
Each sensor has a small LED. Typically one is the sending unit and one the receiving unit. Both should be lit and steady. A dark or blinking LED identifies which side of the pair has the problem.

Clear and clean the lenses
Wipe both lenses with a soft dry cloth. Cobwebs, dust, condensation and — in Augusta especially — spring pollen film are all enough to break the beam. Also clear anything sitting in the door's path such as a trash can, bike or garden tool.

Check the brackets are square
The mounting brackets bend easily if knocked. Both sensors must point directly at one another and sit at the same height. Loosen the wing nut, aim the sensor at its partner, and re-tighten gently once the indicator light goes steady.

Inspect the wiring runs
Follow the thin wire from each sensor back toward the opener. Look for staples driven through the insulation, breaks, rodent damage or loose terminals at the motor unit. A partially broken wire causes intermittent faults that come and go with temperature.

Test the door safely
Once both lights are steady, close the door with the opener. Then test the safety function properly: with the door closing, break the beam with a broom handle — never a hand or foot. The door should reverse immediately. If it doesn't, stop using the opener and call a technician.
Direct sunlight can defeat the sensors
A cause people rarely suspect: strong low sunlight falling directly on the receiving sensor can overwhelm the infrared beam and mimic an obstruction. If your door reliably refuses to close at a particular time of day — typically late afternoon on a west-facing garage — and works perfectly otherwise, this is very likely why. Small sun shields fitted over the sensors resolve it.
Intermittent faults usually mean wiring
If the sensors work most of the time but fail unpredictably, the problem is usually a damaged wire rather than alignment. Sensor wire is thin and often stapled along the wall, and a staple driven slightly too deep will nick the insulation. Over years, movement and humidity turn that into an intermittent short. Because it fluctuates with temperature and moisture, it's easy to mistake for a failing opener.
Never disable the sensors
There are widely shared 'fixes' that involve bypassing or jumpering the safety sensors so the door closes regardless. Please don't. The sensors exist because garage doors have killed and seriously injured children, and bypassing them removes the only automatic protection against a closing door trapping someone. It also almost certainly violates the opener's listing and your insurance position. If the sensors won't work, fix the sensors.
When it isn't the sensors
If both sensor lights are steady and the door still reverses, the cause is usually elsewhere: travel limits set slightly too far, force settings too sensitive, an obstruction in the tracks, or a door that has come out of balance so the opener reads the extra resistance as an obstruction. That last one matters — it points to a spring problem, and adjusting force to compensate for a badly balanced door is unsafe.

Most often the photo-eye safety sensors aren't seeing each other — misaligned, dirty, obstructed, or with a damaged wire. If both sensor lights are steady and it still reverses, look instead at travel limits, force settings, an obstruction in the tracks, or a door that has gone out of balance.
Where are the garage door safety sensors located?

Can I bypass my garage door sensors to make the door close?
