Answer a few quick questions

Local Advantage

In Augusta's climate, insulated doors help reduce heat transfer and humidity impacts. We install doors designed for Georgia weather.

Should you repair or replace your garage door?

There's a persistent assumption that an old garage door is a door on borrowed time. In practice, panels and frames routinely outlast their springs, rollers, cables and opener by decades. Most doors we're asked to replace could reasonably be repaired, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a door you didn't need.

The genuine decision points aren't age. They're structural condition, whether parts are still obtainable, how the repair history is trending, and whether the door is doing the job you actually need it to do.

How to decide between repairing and replacing a garage door

Work through the condition, parts availability, repair history and performance of a garage door to decide whether repair or replacement is the better option.

  1. 1

Assess structural condition of the panels

Look for rust perforation, rot in wooden doors, cracked or split panels, and sections that have separated. Surface dents are cosmetic. Rust that has gone through the steel, or rot that has softened the timber, is structural and cannot be repaired reliably.

  2. 2

Check whether parts are still available

Springs, rollers, cables, hinges and openers are largely standardised and available for most doors. Panels are the exception — a discontinued panel style may be unobtainable, which makes a single damaged section an argument for replacement.

  3. 3

    Review the repair history

One repair every few years is normal ownership. Several distinct failures within a year, each on a different component, usually signals a door reaching the end of its service life as everything ages out together.

  4. 4

    Consider insulation and performance

If your garage is a workshop, gym or connects to living space, an uninsulated door may be costing you comfort and energy that repair will never address. That's a legitimate reason to replace a door that's otherwise working.

  5. 5

    Get an on-site assessment

Balance, track condition and frame squareness are difficult to judge from photographs. A technician can tell you which category your door genuinely falls into. Our assessments are free and carry no obligation.

Repair usually makes sense when...

The panels are structurally sound with only cosmetic marks. The failure is a spring, cable, roller, hinge or opener — all standard, available components. The door is well balanced and the tracks are straight. It's a single fault rather than a run of them. Insulation and appearance already suit your needs. In these cases replacement is buying a new door to solve a problem that a fraction of the work would fix.

Replacement usually makes sense when...

Panels are rusted through, rotten, cracked or separating. A damaged panel style is discontinued and can't be matched. The door has needed several unrelated repairs in a short period. The frame is out of square or the door has come off its tracks repeatedly. You need insulation the current door can't provide, or the door is unsafe in a way that can't be corrected. Also, genuinely, if you're selling — kerb appeal is a real consideration even when the door works.

The single-panel middle ground

People often don't realise individual panels can be replaced. If a storm or a reversing car has damaged one section of an otherwise sound door, swapping that section is frequently possible and far less disruptive than a full replacement. The constraint is availability: if the door is old enough that its panel profile has been discontinued, matching becomes the deciding factor rather than the damage itself.

Insulation in the CSRA climate

Augusta summers regularly clear 95°F, and an uninsulated steel door turns an attached garage into an oven that bleeds heat into the rooms next to it. If your garage is used as a workshop, gym or laundry, or shares a wall with living space, an insulated door genuinely changes how usable the space is. If it's a detached store for a lawnmower, insulation is money spent on nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a garage door last?

The door itself — panels and frame — commonly lasts 20 to 30 years or more. Its moving parts don't: springs are rated in cycles and often need replacing every 7 to 12 years, rollers and cables similarly, and openers typically last 10 to 15. So an old door with new hardware is completely normal and usually the sensible outcome.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garage door?

Repair is almost always the lower immediate outlay, and for a structurally sound door it's usually the better value overall. Replacement makes more sense when panels are rusted through or rotten, parts are discontinued, or the door has needed repeated unrelated repairs. Can you replace just one damaged garage door panel?

Often, yes. If the rest of the door is sound and the panel profile is still manufactured, replacing a single section is very achievable. The limiting factor is whether the style can still be matched — on older doors it sometimes can't, and that's usually what tips the decision toward full replacement.

Will a new garage door add value to my home?

A garage door is one of the largest visible surfaces on most homes, so it carries real weight in kerb appeal, particularly if you're selling. We won't put a figure on it — that depends entirely on your property and the local market — but visually it's among the more noticeable exterior improvements.

How do I know if my door is beyond repair?

The reliable indicators are structural rather than age-related: rust perforation, rot, cracked or separating panels, a frame out of square, or a door that repeatedly comes off its tracks. A free on-site assessment will tell you plainly which side of the line your door falls on.
